The Advent Calendar
The advent calendar is originally meant to lead children in particular to the Christmas festivities in anticipation. While changing the behavior of the background image and maybe the production changes, the number of boxes remains constant with 24, to hide behind the door pictures, chocolate chips or surprises. This complies to the days from 1 December to Christmas Eve on 24 December.Once in religious families there were hanging 24 pictures bit by bit in December on the wall. Than a other variantis, that there was 24 painted chalk lines on the wall, which the children could wipe out one of it daily. Or there were straws placed in a manger, one for each day, up to Christmas Eve. Another form of the Advent Calendar is the Xmas Clock, or an Advent candle, which could be burned every day to the next marker.
Probably the earliest form of an advent calendar dates back at the year 1851!
The first printed copy owes its existence to the childhood experiences of a Swabian pastor's son from Maulbronn. His mother drew 24 boxes to a carton, on every one was a 1 "Wieble" sewn.
1908 the first, albeit still windowless Advent calendar left the printing press. It consisted of 2 sheets. On one were number, on the other an angel images. Every day was now an angel cut out and pasted on a number.
From 1920 on the Advent calendar found international recognition and dissemination. Later (in the thirties) was small windows punched into the sheet with the numbers and pictures pasted to the sheet behind it.
The 2nd World War brought the soaring of the Advent Calendar to an abrupt end.
Only after the war period the Advent was able to build on to its success.
From the beginning of the Advent calendar was designed, itwas an article of trade and commercial use. This commercial design means that Christian motifs into the background, and cartoon characters in place of suffering occur frequently.
As part of cultural policy in the Third Reich, the Christian motifswas replaced by fairy tale characters, mythical Germanic gods and demons.
